In front of a crowd of 2,000 fans, Olhanense were too strong for their opponents Desportivo Aves and ran out comfortable 2-0 winners to complete the double over the team from the small industrial town of Vila das Aves in the far north of Portugal.
The home side gave a league debut to Brazilian Anselmo in place of injured skipper Rui Durante. In defence, João Gonçalves was outstanding and in midfield Messi and Castro worked hard despite the over physical attention of the opposition.
Olhanense missed several good opportunities in the first-half and Toy was guilty of missing a golden chance when played through by Ukra. The under 21 Portuguese international was having another impressive game and it was from his right wing cross that Djalmir rose above a static defence to give Olhanense a deserved lead in the 65th minute.
Bruno Mestre replaced Messi in the 70th minute and five minutes later he slotted home another right wing cross to put the home side well in control.
It could have been a different story if Aves had taken advantage of some slack play in the home defence but Bruno Verissimo made a flying save from Tiago Valente’s fierce volley to deny the visitors.
With fifteen minutes to go Aves were reduced to 10 men when Ricardo Nascimento saw straight red for kicking out at Bruno Mestre. Olhanense were the only team in the top five to win and they go above Santa Clara, at the top of the table, who surprisingly lost 0-2 at home to Gil Vicente whilst third placed Feirense also lost at home to Varzim 1-2.
With the promotion race hotting up a large crowd is expected for the visit of local Algarve rivals Portimonense to the José Arcanjo Stadium, Olhão on Sunday, kick-off 11.15am. The match is being shown live on Sport TV.
Guests of the club
There is now a group of some 20 expats who follow Sporting Clube Olhanense on a regular basis and the Club President, José Isidoro da Silva Sousa, invited them as his guests for the game against Desportivo Aves.
This was in recognition of the efforts being made by the group to promote the football club amongst the expat community in the Algarve.
The group would welcome newcomers to join them. They have allocated seats in the main stand and even produce a programme, in English, that lists the players, results, league table and interesting football related items.
An article about the group was published in the well read daily Portuguese newspaper BOLA last Monday.
