Following the team’s sterling effort at Benfica in midweek, it was no surprise that, with only pride to play for in their last Carlsberg League Cup quarter-final game, SC Olhanense rested five first choice players.
The league’s top goalscorer, Djalmir, skipper Rui Duarte, keeper Bruno Verissimo, Ukra and Rui Baião were all on the bench.
V.Guimarães fielded a full strength team as only an emphatic win would give them any chance of reaching the last four.
Guimarães took the lead in the 22nd minute through Fajardo and further goals from Brazilian Marquinho and Moreno gave the home side a comfortable 3-0 win.
The result was enough for them to qualify as the best 2nd placed team and they now join Porto, Sporting and Benfica in the semi-finals.
Olhanense will hope that the experience gained in having played three Premier Liga teams will stand them in good stead during the second half of the season.
