Born out of a passion for quality wines and antiques, Old Stories On The Vine in Almancil encapsulates “the very best of Portuguese history and wine culture”. The collaborative space consists of an antique store on the ground-floor and wine workshop on the second. The grand opening party on June 5 was a success with family and friends gathering together to support the new venture.
Vitor Sá Rodrigues, who runs the antiques side of the business, has a keen eye for unique pieces and restoration. With roots all over the country, Braga in particular, the majority of the shop’s contents are personal family items. Books written by his late grandfather, the well-respected historian Vitor Sá, are proudly presented amongst other family heirlooms. Visiting the space and talking to Vitor directly about the special pieces that are so close to his heart is a real treat.
The concept was born out of the belief that the art of storytelling is imperative to both the antique and wine industries. Each antique piece or boutique bottle of wine will have been through its own special journey to end up in the Almancil store and the team at Old Stories believe that it is their duty to make that story heard and appreciated.
The wine workshop, on the upstairs mezzanine, overlooks the antique store providing a distinctive and private setting for tastings and events. Laura Truman and Justin O’Hanlon – both WSET (Wine & Spirit Education Trust) qualified – who have worked in the wine industry in various roles all over the world, both settled in Portugal because of their love for Portuguese wines. They believe that being from non-wine producing countries, they can provide totally unbiased and knowledgeable reviews and advice. “With a strong focus on boutique wines, you won’t find any of our listings in supermarkets,” they said.
The contents for tastings and workshops will be ever-changing and bring in winemakers from all over the country. They also offer other services including private tastings at your home, “stock your holiday fridge”, tailor-made wine club and “outrageously well-priced monthly deals”.
