Old in Japan

GOVERNMENT FIGURES show that the number of children under the age of 15 in Japan has hit a record low and is expected to continue declining.

Japan currently has the world’s highest ratio of elderly to young people, with under 15s making up just 13.6 per cent of the country’s population.

The Japanese government has pledged to bring in policies making it easier for women to have children, by improving child care and maternity rights for working women in the hope of boosting birth rates.
