AROUND 500 old folk from the borough of Castro Marim recently enjoyed an outing to Vilamoura Marina, organised by the council in an effort to combat loneliness and isolation among the area’s elderly residents.
Many were seeing the marina for the first time and as well as a pleasurable walk, the group also enjoyed a show at Vilamoura Casino entitled O Rei Dança (The King Dances).
The idea to organise the day out came from vice-president of Castro Marim Câmara, Filomena Sintra, who accompanied the group on the visit. She was pleased with the response, commenting: “The outing was promoted through the local juntas de freguesia and the take up was astonishing, especially by those living in rural areas who have few opportunities to socialise outside of their homes.”
