Oil scare

THOUSANDS OF bottles of contaminated sunflower seed cooking oil on sale in Portugal originated in the Ukraine.

The Portuguese food authority Autoridade de Segurança Alimentar e Económica (ASAE) said that vegetable oil had been contaminated with mineral oil or petrolatum, a by-product of the distillation of petroleum to produce petrol.

When ingested, the chemical can cause chemical pneumonia and severe chemical burns in the intestinal tract.

António Nunes of the ASAE warned people not to buy Ukrainian sunflower oil until the contaminated makes and batches could be officially published and the suspect bottles recalled.
