Five ships are collecting seismic data off the coast between Vila Real de Santo António and Faro until May 19 as part of plans to prospect for oil in the area.
The operation is part of the Repsol/RWE’s oil exploration programme for the region and will be done in three phases: off Faro coast between March 5 and 30, off Culatra and Tavira islands from March 31 to April 25 and off the Guadiana river mouth from April 26 to May 19.
Meanwhile, fishing restrictions have been imposed while prospecting works take place, raising concerns among local fishermen who fear for the future of the industry should oil drilling go ahead.
