Residents living on the main road into Carvoeiro, near Lagoa, were woken in the early hours of August 21 by the sound of glass being smashed as a group of thieves attempted to break into an off-licence.
Witnesses said they saw a group of “three or four individuals with their heads covered” breaking into the shop and loading the boot of “a dark Audi car” with several bags with stolen items, later discovered to be mainly cigarette packets.
One resident, who did not wish to be named, told the Algarve Resident that he rushed out of bed at 5am when he heard glass being shattered as he thought his own establishment was being broken into.
“I rushed out of the house and was shocked to see such violence. It seemed out of a movie scene,” he said. “The presence of some residents shouting at them did not seem to deter them. It all happened so quickly.”
The GNR were immediately called to scene and the case is now being investigated by the Polícia Judiciária.
Meanwhile, several petitions have been initiated by residents requesting more police reinforcements for the village.
