International golfing stars will be gracing the Victoria golf course in Vilamoura if the Oceânico Group bid to host the 2018 Ryder Cup comes to fruition.
Oceânico Group director, Gerry Fagan, said: “We are very pleased to be able to announce that we are putting the Oceânico Victoria golf course up as a contender to host the 2018 Ryder Cup. The commitment from the National Tourism Board and the backing of the Portuguese government to bring the event to Portugal shows a great level of determination in making the Ryder Cup happen here.”
Already golfing stars have shown their backing of the bid including Lee Westwood and Oceânico resident tour pro, Darren Clarke.
“It is fantastic news for the team at Oceânico to be entering their bid to host the 2018 Ryder Cup Match. The way European Golf is progressing and the strength and depth we have in some of our younger talent it should be a great event,” said world number five golfer Lee Westwood.
PGA Tour and European Tour golfer Darren Clarke added: “The Algarve and specifically Vilamoura, is a great venue for the Ryder Cup. Golfers have been coming down and enjoying the facilities and atmosphere here for years and it would be great to see a Ryder Cup played around the Oceânico Victoria course.”
