OBITUARY – Rachel Waite

Rachel Waite

February 12 1933 – May 19 2012

After qualifying as a primary school teacher Rachel, started her career in Cheltenham followed by four years in Switzerland.

Rachel was then invited to Lisbon in the early 1960s to teach English. It was during this time that she met David and moved to the Algarve where she set up a primary school.

Her creative and hands on approach to teaching captured the imaginations and respect of her pupils and their parents leading to many long lasting and deep friendships.

After retiring, she and David moved from Almancil to a small aldeia near Salir, enjoying the wildlife and the peace and quiet so hard to find nearer the coast. Here she was visited by friends and family whilst at the same time forging close new friendships locally.

She did not suffer fools gladly and was one of the most refreshingly honest people you could hope to meet.

To her nephew and nieces she was the perfect aunt, somebody to rely on to give good advice, a great sense of humour and the rare ability to listen. To her friends she was loyal and genuine. Her enthusiasm, laughter and concern for others, regardless of her own health problems, will always be appreciated, loved and admired.

Rachel passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 18. She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered.

Thank you to all who gave their time and energy helping Rachel and David during this time. Lesley Goldie
