Janet Scriven (Jan)
October 2, 1943-May 29, 2012
Jan was a familiar face to many in the Algarve, particularly the many jazz lovers here.
Having moved here on retirement with husband Tony, hopefully for “10 years in the sun” and just made it, they quickly embraced a whole new community of friends here.
Since diagnosis 20 months ago at the International Health Centre, Albufeira, Jan had battled against Leukaemia but died peacefully in her sleep at home early Tuesday morning.
Although not a musician herself, Jan was heavily involved with the running of The New Orleans Jazzband – meeting and greeting people on the door at the various venues where the band played, and leading the traditional “Umbrella Parade”.
Jan is sadly missed by husband Tony, son Jonathan and his wife Ali; daughter Becky and her husband Ben and granddaughter Evie Grace (all in the USA), sister Annie and a whole host of nephews and nieces.
Special thanks must go to the doctors, nurses and staff at Barlavento Hospital, and at Instituto Português de Oncologia de Francisco Gentil in Lisbon where Jan received such fantastic treatment and kindness.
