Jean Allen Luckman

JEAN ALLEN Luckman left this life quietly and peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Sunday, April 24. She was 87 years young.

Jean will be sadly missed not only by her son Paul, granddaughters Natasha and Nicola and her great grandchildren Benjamin and Jacob, but also by the very many people who knew her over the 30 years that she lived with her husband, John, in the Algarve.

Those of us, who had the great privilege of knowing this wonderful lady, will not be sorry at her passing. Anyone who knew her well would be aware that, since the death of her beloved husband six years ago, her greatest wish was that they should be reunited as soon as possible. We should rejoice that her prayers have been answered.

Over her long life, this extraordinary woman has done many things. In the Algarve, she will be remembered for her unstinting work in fundraising for abandoned animals and the joy she gave to many when she and her husband took to the dance floor and showed their expertise at ballroom dancing during the many functions they attended. The Algarvean’s Experimental Theatre Group will miss their oldest member (she and her husband were founder members) and the International Christian Fellowship, where she was a regular worshipper, will mourn a much-loved member of its congregation. Jean touched the lives of many people and the Algarve has lost yet another of its pioneering and colourful characters.

A celebration of Jean’s life will be held at the International Christian Fellowship in the Baptist Church on the Avenida 25 de Abril in Portimão, on Saturday, May 21, at 11.30am. Jean’s family have requested that, rather than sending flowers, they would prefer a donation to be given to Jean’s favourite charity, Associação dos Amigos dos Animais (AAA), for which a collection will be taken during the service.
