Around 90 per cent of Portugal’s national health nurses took to the streets of Lisbon between January 27 and 29 to protest against a government proposal to cut the starting wage for a newly-qualified graduate nurse.
According to the nurses union, the protest was sparked by the government proposing a starting salary of 995 euros, compared to the current 1,020 euros, until 2014 when the government has proposed a starting salary of 1,200 euros, which other civil servants currently receive.
According to the nurses union, this was the largest strike since 1976.
