The Algarve’s Rui Machado has regained his status as Portugal’s top male tennis player following his victory at the 85,000 euro Poznan Challenger in Poland.
The 27-year-old surpassed Frederico Gil in the ATP world rankings with good wins over Jan Hajek, Vincent Millot and Yuri Schukin before beating home favourite Jerzy Jonowicz 6-3, 6-3 in the final. Machado will now compete in similar events in Croatia, Italy and San Marino on the way to next month’s US Open.
