The number of couples where both people are registered as unemployed increased by 17.5% in August compared to the same period last year. The figures, from IEFP (the Portuguese institute for employment and professional training), show there were 6,456 unemployed couples in Portugal during one of the busiest months of the year (for tourism and the national economy). IEFP began collating this kind of data 12 years ago, when the number of couples where both members were unemployed came to just 2,862.
