Number of new companies leaps 11.9%

Over 21,000 companies were founded in Portugal in the first half of 2015, representing an 11.9% increase compared to the same period last year.

The boom was most noticeable in Lisbon, where most of the new companies were set up (28%), followed by Porto (18.5%), Braga (8.2%), Setúbal (6.2%) and Aveiro.

The ambiguous category of “other services” was the sector that saw most companies being born (40.7%), followed by the hotel and restaurant industry (18.8%) and agriculture (16.1%).

The data was revealed by risk management company IGNIOS in its monthly bulletin.
