It has been billed by the capital’s mayor as an opportunity for Lisbon to be known all over the world, but World Youth Day is seemingly becoming an opportunity for disgruntled public sector workers to announce strikes and protests: police, doctors, nurses have already firmed up dates to coincide with the event at the beginning of August, and now the capital’s rubbish collectors have joined them. Forever positive, mayor Carlos Moedas has said he is “open to reaching an agreement”.
