SITUATED ON the quaint cobbled street of Rua António Barrosa in the centre of Lagos old town, the Fools and Horses pub has become a favourite and permanent fixture for expatriates since it was established in 1979.
When Eddy Strayton arrived in the Algarve from Essex he had the vision of creating a pub that would bring a touch of England into the sleepy Portuguese town.
He has now managed to maintain the business for over 25 years and is one of the longest running foreign commercial businesses in Lagos. His mum and dad shortly followed him to Portugal and they still live here today, baking the steak and kidney, chicken, apple and blackberry pies that prove so popular with the clientele.
It is an exciting time for Fools and Horses as it has launched a new carvery earlier this month, just in time for winter. The pub stays open all year round and will be offering the British Carvery every Sunday to entice customers in from the cold. Included on the brick carvery is roast pork, lamb, beef and turkey as well as all your favourite vegetables, stuffing, Yorkshire pudding as well as soup to start.
Portuguese cooks, Bela and Ana Marie, have worked tirelessly in the Fools and Horses kitchen for 20 years and their daily English and Portuguese specials are as popular today as they were back in the early 80s.
The pub offers a range of draught local and English beers, as well as bottled beers and the new cider drink Decider. The pub shows all sporting events on their two plasma screens, including all the big football matches on Sky Sports.
Popular meals on match days include the North Atlantic Cod Special, as well as the All Day English Breakfast that runs from 10am every day.
Eddy and his team always create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for locals and tourists alike. Although it has the essence of an English pub, the traditional architecture and Portuguese kitchen staff ensures that Fools and Horses maintains the unique Algarvean quality that consumes the Lagos old town.
