Condemnation over nuclear test claims
THE MEDIA in South Korea has reported that an underground weapons test took place in Gilju, in the Hamgyong Province, at 10.36am local time on Monday. North Korea’s claim that it has nuclear capabilities has sparked international criticism and the UN Security Council met to discuss steps that should be taken, including imposing sanctions. If the claim is proven, North Korea will be the ninth country to have nuclear weapons. Reports about the size of the bomb are still conflicting. South Korea says it is around 550 tons of destructive power, but Russia reports that it is between five and 15 kilotons – the 1945 Hiroshima bomb was between 12.5 and 15 kilotons. One thing that is certain is that both the US and Japan recorded seismic waves activity around the suspected detonation time.
