No sex, drugs or rock and roll

The Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica has placed a ban on all music played on the radio featuring lyrics that “promote” sex, violence, murder or arson.

The ban has been brought into force because of a music craze sweeping the dance halls in the Caribbean hotspot, favouring explicit lyrics.

Radio stations had hoped they could avoid a total ban of some of the nation’s favourite tunes by censoring or beeping offensive words, however this has not been allowed by the Commission.

The ban also applies to soca tunes and hip-hop, leaving the radio stations in Jamaica struggling to find songs that do fall into the permitted category of tunes.
