There were no fireworks at the Bonfim Stadium as Olhanense fought out a dour 0-0 draw in front of over 4,000 spectators at V.Setúbal on Saturday.
Despite the team’s lowly position in the league, more than 1,000 faithful Olhanense supporters made the 280kms journey north. The towns of Olhão and Setúbal have strong links and there was a carnival atmosphere as many of the fans mingled freely enjoying the food and drink supplied by their hosts.
Jorge Costa started with a 4-2-4 formation bringing in Zequinha up front in place of the out-of-form Rabiola, whilst Miguel Garcia returned to the defence after serving a one-match suspension.
The home side nearly took the lead in the 10th minute when a defensive error gave Hélder Barbosa a clear sight of goal but fortunately for Olhanense his shot rebounded off the inside of the post. The visitors only effort on target was a header from Zequinha, which was well saved by Nuno Santos.
The match had little quality and failed to warm the crowd on a chilly afternoon. The visitors reverted to their more familiar 4-3-3 in the second period and consequently looked more fluid.
The final result means that Olhanense have now gone over eight and a half hours without scoring a goal.
There was no clean sheet for referee Marco Ferreira, who booked nine players and sent off Miguel Garcia in the final minute for a second yellow card.
Next Sunday Olhanense entertain P. Ferreira in a Carlsberg League Cup match at the José Arcanjo Stadium, Olhão. Kick-off: 3pm
