CARS WILL be banned in Vila Real de Santo António at the end of next month, when the borough takes part in The European Mobility Week from September 16 to 22. The aim is to encourage more people to use alternative means of getting around, such as walking, cycling or public transport. The long-term objective is to reduce traffic congestion, cut gas emissions and improve the health and quality of life among European citizens. The initiative also hopes to encourage a behaviour that is compatible with sustainable development, in particular with the protection of air quality, avoidance of global warming and noise reduction. The campaign seeks to remind the general public of the effects their chosen form of transport has on the environment and their health. A series of activities has been planned in order for this to be a different and enjoyable week for all the residents.
