Nine GNR agents accused of torture, aggravated kidnap and inhumane treatment

Nine GNR agents from the Porto area have been formally accused of crimes of torture and “other cruel and inhumane treatments”, including aggravated kidnapping. The case goes back to an incident in 2019 involving a man suspected of having stolen a car belonging to one of the agents. He is understood to have been kept at the police station for over eight hours in which the policemen inflicted “continued physical aggressions and intimidated him psychologically”. It is not explained whether the man had stolen the car or not. But a note on the public prosecutor’s site says the Public Ministry is petitioning to have the agents thrown out of the police force.
