New leader announced
COLONEL SADA Abubakar has been named as the new Sultan of Sokoto, less than two weeks after his brother, the former sultan, was killed in a plane crash along with 95 other people. Thousands gathered to celebrate the appointment of the 20th Sultan outside the palace, while Colonel Abubakar went to thank those who selected him. He has served with West Africa’s peacekeeping force in Sierra Leone and is descended from Uthman Dan Fodio, who led a 19th century Jihad to spread Islam across northern Nigeria. The new Sultan is said to be an easy going peaceful man and state governor Attahiru Bafarawa is hopeful that he will fill the position admirably.
