Fnac comes to Algarve Shopping

FRENCH multinational Fnac is due to open a store in Algarve Shopping (Guia) in June. The store is anticipated to have an area of about 1,500sqm, a space only slightly smaller than that occupied by the Fnac shops already in operation in Lisbon – Fnac Colombo and Fnac Chiado. Fnac is one of the largest distributors of cultural and leisure products in Europe and available at Fnac in Guia will be concert tickets, computer and audio equipment, an extensive book shop, CDs and DVDs, exhibition rooms, a reading room and a café.

Portimão launches

health screenings

PORTIMÃO Câmara has approved a contract with the Social Assistance Adventists to conduct screenings for hypertension, diabetes and cholesterol. Five nurses will perform the tests once a month until the end of the year in Portimão and Mexilhoeira Grande. In Portimão, screenings will take place on Saturdays in the Municipal Auditorium on the following dates: May 7, from 3pm to 6pm, and then on June 4, July 2, August 6, and September 3, from 3pm to 7pm. On October 8, from 3pm to 6pm, and on November 5 and December 3 from 2pm to 5pm. In Mexilhoeira Grande, screenings will take place in the Junta de Freguesia on Sundays between 9.30am and 12.30pm, on the following dates: May 8, June 5, July 3, August 7, September 4, October 9, November 6 and December 4.

New scheduled route Cork-Faro

SINCE APRIL 26, Faro Airport has one scheduled route with Cork operated by low-cost airline Aer Lingus. An Airbus 320, with 174 seats, will serve this route three times a week. This is the first scheduled route launched at Faro Airport from Ireland, a priority market for the Algarve region tourist activity. With this launching, Ireland will be connected to the Algarve by scheduled services to the main Irish cities: Dublin, Cork and Shannon. The flights will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Vitorino hails Academic Week

EVENTS TO mark the Algarve University’s 20th Academic Week (May 5-14) were announced recently by Faro Câmara President, José Vitorino, and Youth Affairs Councillor, Paulo Santos. Vitorino said the event was one of the most important occasions in the Algarve and praised young people as “stirrers of minds” and “promoters of change”. The president of the University’s Academic Association stressed the strong support that the Câmara has given to the event. This year’s programme has a wide choice of bands and sporting activities, as well as a solidarity gala. Among the bands appearing are Moonspell (May 6), Daniela Mercury (May 7), Reamonn (May 10) Alanis Morissette (May 11) and Da Weasel (May 13).
