Newly-formed association to defend Ferragudo fishermen

An association has been formed to protect the interests of fishermen and their trade in the fishing village of Ferragudo, in Lagoa council.

The Associação de Pescadores de Ferragudo e Afins (APF), Association of Ferragudo Fishermen and Related Issues, held its first Annual General Meeting last month, where issues such as the future of the industry in the area were discussed.

Fiona Almeida, a member of the APF, told the Algarve Resident: “The fishermen, their boats and equipment are an integral part of Ferragudo’s landscape, a living, working museum, and it is widely recognised that the village is one of the last of its type in the Algarve.”

As plans to redevelop Ferragudo’s waterfront are in the pipeline, the association hopes to give a voice to the fishermen, their families and the residents in order to ensure that future generations will be able to continue the industry in the village.

“Visitors will also be able to enjoy the scenery with the fishermen of the future mooring their vessels and working along the picturesque harbour,” Fiona said.

APF’s main objective is to defend the local interests relating to the fishing industry such as the technical, economic, social, ecological and cultural aspects.

The member said: “Although the fishing population is small, it is tight knit and many depend upon the industry to make a living but, knowing that others not connected with the industry also appreciate the importance of fishing for the village, the association is open to all who share its objectives, and we know there are many like-minded people out there.”

The next APF meeting will be held on Wednesday October 13 at 6pm at the former Junta de Freguesia (parish council) offices in Rua 1º de Maio, Ferragudo, close to the church.

For those interested in becoming a member of APF, reduced membership fees have been agreed for those who want to be involved but do not practice fishing professionally.

A one-off membership fee for extraordinary contributory members over 18 years of age costs 12.50 Euros and an annual membership fee costs 12 Euros.
