New Year’s Eve in the Algarve

AS THE New Year approaches, many of you will be deciding where you would like to celebrate.

Here is The Resident’s  guide to some of the places near you where you can watch firework displays, have a drink, listen to music and be merry.

Albufeira

New Year’s Eve will be celebrated at Praia dos Pescadores, more commonly known as Fishermen’s Beach. Warming up the crowds will be Boss AC, a Portuguese hip-hop group from 10pm. This will be followed, as always, by a fireworks display, which will be set off from five points between Praia da Oura and the harbour. Following the fireworks, Melanie C will take the stage to entertain the crowds, where she will sing new songs as well as old favourites.

Faro

The festivities will take place in Largo de São Francisco, where the fireworks can be watched and drinks are available.

Lagos

An impressive fireworks and pyrotechnics display will light up the marina next to the bridge, which can be watched from the pedestrian walkway.

Olhão

There will be live music next to the shore from 11pm with a perfect view of the fireworks display after midnight.

Quarteira

Celebrations will begin at 10pm in the Praça do Mar, where popular Portuguese band La Luna will kick off the evening’s entertainment and countdown to the New Year. Midnight will be marked with an impressive fireworks display and traditional champagne and cake will be distributed. After midnight, a phenomenon in Portuguese music, João Pedro Pais, will take the stage to gear the festivities into the early hours of the morning. The music for the remainder of the party will be provided by La Luna. The evening in Quarteira promises to be the best New Year’s Eve party yet.

Tavira

The New Year can be celebrated in the Pavilhão Municipal Dr. Eduardo from 9pm onwards. Dimensão 2, Bros de Mel and Luís Guilherme will provide the evening’s musical entertainment and the fireworks display will mark the turn of the year. Tables can be reserved, with a bottle of sparkling wine and nibbles by calling 281 320 595.

Vale do Lobo

Monty’s in the Praça promises a party to remember, especially with the fireworks tearing at the midnight sky over the beach.

There are more events throughout the Algarve on New Year’s Eve, but at the time of going to press they had not been confirmed. If you have an event organised, contact us at [email protected] and we will try to include details in our December 29 edition.
