This special New Year’s Day morning saw a very large whale ‘beached’ in Monte Gordo as the tide started going out at around 11am.
If it hadn’t been for quick-thinking locals and the authorities the animal – estimated at between 8-10 metres long – may not have made it.
As things were, it was successfully towed out to deep water by boat in a three-hour operation.
Maritime police will now be ‘monitoring’ the whale’s progress, to ensure he or she doesn’t turn back towards shallower waters and renewed danger.
Locals who called the incident in have since downloaded pictures and video clips online (click here).
