New Year’s concerts with a difference

A joint venture from the Banda Filarmónica de São Brás de Alportel and the Coro dos Amigos do Museu will see two New Year’s concerts being performed this month. The first will be on Saturday, January 13 in the Igreja Misericordia in Tavira (as part of their regular ‘Music in Churches’ programme), starting at 6pm, followed by another on Sunday, January 14, in the Igreja de São Brás at 4.30pm.

The mixed repertoire from the choir will come from Buxtehude, Fauré and others. The band’s selection will be similarly varied and then all the musicians and singers will come together to perform a ‘Missa Brevis’. This version has been written by Dutch composer Jacob de Haan and, unusually, has been specifically written for band and choir rather than the usual orchestral scoring. It is believed that this is the first ever performance in Portugal, certainly in the Algarve, and it will be presented on two occasions.

Cost for the concert on Saturday is €6 while the Sunday concert will be free. All are welcome.
