Born on the dot of midnight, Portugal’s first baby of 2018 is reported to be fighting for her life in a Porto maternity hospital.
Letícia Silva was born 13 weeks premature (her due date was March) weighing just 860 grams and measuring a “little more than 34 centimetres”.
She is expected to remain in hospital for “at least another two and a half months”, say reports.
Photographs of all Portugal’s earlybird New Year babies appeared today in popular tabloid Correio da Manhã.
At almost exactly the moment tiny Letícia arrived, Sara was born in Vila Franca de Xira, followed by a strapping Pedro in Guarda (at 3.585 kilos, the New Year whopper), Madalena in Leiria, Arina in Coimbra, Verónica in Viseu and João in Santarém.
In the Algarve, three babies arrived in Faro and three more in Portimão, but all during New Year’s day afternoon.
