ALBUFEIRA’S NEW Year party at Fishermen’s Beach (Praia dos Pescadores) will cost the council a lot less this year. According to a report in Barlavento newspaper, the investment by the Câmara will be almost half the amount spent in 2004.
Arrangements for last year’s show were fraught with problems. International star Bryan Adams was booked to perform but, just 10 days prior to the concert, he pulled out due to throat problems. Portuguese/Canadian singer Nelly Furtado stepped in at the last minute to replace him.
The planning for this year’s event doesn’t appear to have been plain sailing either. Albufeira Câmara was close to confirming UK group Simple Minds but, at the last minute, the deal fell through due to financial reasons. It is rumoured that the council was also in contact with UB40’s agent.
For several years, Albufeira council has ‘dug deep’ to book major names in the music industry to perform. Nelly Furtado’s show is said to have cost the council around 550,000 euros, but this year the council plans to spend just 300,000 euros. This does not include the cost of the fireworks, which will be paid for by local businesses.
However, despite the council spending less, the party will be bigger as it will be spread over two nights. Popular Portuguese boy band D’zert, from Portuguese soap opera Morangos com Açúcar, will take to the stage on December 30 and, on New Year’s Eve, well-known national pop band Santos e Pecadores will perform, followed by one of Portugal’s most famous bands ever, Xutos e Pontapés.
Speaking about the New Year’s programme for this year, Albufeira Câmara President Desidério Silva commented: “We decided to aim for the Portuguese market by booking Portuguese acts, allowing us to save some money.” The party at Praia dos Pescadores will “continue to be as great as ever”, he said.
