New water treatment plant

A new water treatment plant, estimated to cost around 17.5 million euros, is due to be built in 2010 in Portimão council to cater for waste from up to 180,000 residents from three councils.

The new facility will be built on a 50,000sqm piece of land donated by Portimão Câmara near to the current water treatment plant in that council and will also cater for waste from Monchique and part of Lagoa council.

According to Portimão’s municipal water treatment company (EMARP), the construction of this facility may however not stop the bad odours in the area which are thought to not only be caused by the waste but also the build up of organic material in the sediment of the river Arade.
