New tourism chief to be chosen

The regional tourism board (ERTA) was due to meet yesterday (Thursday) to approve the appointment of a new president.

Previous chief António Pina was informed in July that he must resign as president due to a legal technicality.

The assembly has held several meetings since but without a quorum, but Nuno Aires, current vice-president of the ERTA, said that yesterday’s meeting was due to have the necessary number of members as it has a special meaning and should “reflect the necessary union for the sector to function and at the same time approve a new president”.

Since the news broke about António Pina having to resign, Nuno Aires has assumed the presidency and said that he wants to maintain ‘the unity between the directors around the initial project.’

He added: “We are going to work for a common cause – Algarve tourism.”
