New sun cream protection factors

THE EUROPEAN Commission has committed itself to giving consumers better information about the level of protection provided by sun creams.

The current factor numbering indicates protection from UVB radiation, which causes sunburn, but not from UVA, which also contributes to skin cancer. The Commission says UVA protection must now be indicated, and it also wants to ban the phrase “sun blocker”, on the grounds that no product can provide full protection against ultra-violet light. The new rules could be in place by next summer.
