TWO NEW shopping areas are under development in the eastern Algarve councils of Loulé and Olhão.
Loulé Câmara approved the architectural project last week for the construction of a new Sonae owned supermarket near the Mina de Sal Gema.
Promoted by the Sonae Group, the new commercial space will cover an area of 6,000 square metres, including a parking area for 298 cars.
The construction hasn’t started but the project is already causing protests in the local Câmara, where the opposition members have denounced the effect the development will have on local small businesses.
Meanwhile, in Olhão, construction of the Ria Shopping, located in the old Francisco Padinha football pitch, is said to be moving along well. The opening is scheduled for October.
Described as the biggest shopping centre in the eastern Algarve, the Ria Shopping covers a total area of 17,295 square metres and six floors, three of them underground with car parking spaces for 1,100 vehicles.
The shopping centre will host a Jumbo supermarket, 57 shops, 13 restaurants and a large gymnasium.
