THE NEW season got underway recently and the Algarve lawn bowling league has now expanded to eight teams, with two new ones emerging from the Vale do Lobo Club. All teams set out optimistically, with plenty of games and points to play for.
Clube Praia D’Oura opened their campaign with a crushing home win against Tavira 99 – 31, taking all nine points on offer. Making an equally convincing start were the Alvor Blues, who defeated the PDF Sinners by 91 shots to 27, amassing all nine points also.
The other two games were much closer affairs, with the PDF Crusaders winning a very tight match against the Alvor Greens by just two shots, 45 – 47. Crusaders earned six points while the Greens took four points. Finally, the two Vale do Lobo teams clashed in their first league match, the Panamas won by 53 – 36 and earned eight points against their rivals, the Top Hats, who gained the other two available points.
The Algarve championships have attracted a record entry for 2005/06, with competitions for singles, pairs, triples and fours. The draws will be made shortly and we look forward to more exciting bowling. Anyone interested in taking up the game should contact the league secretary Jan McGlynn on 289 315 326, who can give you details of your nearest club plus any other information you may need.
