New resident at Lagos zoo

Lagos Zoo is home to a new female pygmy hippopotamus, Luna, the only one of this species in the Algarve.

Luna was born in 2008 in Bioparc Fuengirola, near Malaga in Spain, under the EEP programme for endangered species.

Lagos Zoo is due to receive another female pygmy hippopotamus to keep Luna company.

An outdoor installation that represents the area where these animals live naturally has been designed and built on guidelines provided by the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA) at a total investment of €70,000.
