Sérgio Conceição has wasted no time in stamping his authority on the Olhanense football structure. With no game at the weekend, Olhanense having been eliminated from the League Cup, Conceição gave the players a much deserved break.
The hands-on coach has had an impressive start to his managerial career, in the last three games he’s recorded victories over V.Setúbal and Beira-Mar and was unlucky not to take all three points against Sporting.
The 3-2 win in Setúbal was the first time in 18 seasons in the top flight that Olhanense has overcome a two goal deficit. The players have responded well to the more intensive but shorter training regime.
Twenty-two year old Ismaily, scorer of the winning goal in Setúbal, said: “The coach was a top class international and is greatly respected by the players. His style of attacking play suits us and we are confident of more success.”
Cameroon striker Yontcha, third choice centre-forward for much of the season, has been a revelation in recent games and has set himself a target of eleven goals for the season. His two against Setúbal bring his total to four.
On Sunday, Olhanense entertain Rio Ave at the José Arcanjo Stadium, Olhão (behind McDonalds on the EN125) Kick-off 4pm. Tickets – €10 to €25 – are available on the day. Rio Ave are currently in 12th position some six points behind 7th placed Olhanense.
On Sunday, February 26, Gil Vicente, who recently ended Porto’s 55 game unbeaten run in the league and also knocked Sporting out of the League Cup, are in town, KO 4pm.
