Rubbish || Lagoa’s street cleaning will no longer be carried out by the local council. The news came shortly after the council announced it had purchased a new refuse truck for over €183,000.
Starting on September 1, it will be the parish union of Lagoa and Carvoeiro’s job to keep Lagoa’s streets clean. It will also be in charge of cleaning the streets in Poço Partido, Boavista and Sesmarias.
The union says that due to its “close relationship with the population” it can more easily identify the problems the town is faced with, and has even announced that it will be focusing on some “critical areas” such as Bairro Che Lagoense and the area near Soful.
Lagoa’s seven street cleaners will be keeping their jobs, the union guaranteed, and more may even be hired soon.
The announcement was made shortly after Lagoa council revealed it has bought a new refuse truck in an effort to “improve the municipality’s waste collection services”. The truck comes equipped with a crane.
Its purchase was prompted by “an urgent need to improve the service’s conditions”, as council vehicles are getting old and breaking down frequently, a press release explained.
Stressing that waste management is one of the council’s greatest concerns – as it “involves and affects everyone” – the council added that it has also hired more workers, introduced new recycling units and is offering free-of-charge waste disposal at the municipal dump until the end of the year.
The council also praised the local population in its statement, saying that locals’ correct use of rubbish bins and other waste collection means has helped the municipality become “clean and healthy”.
