DOURO QUEEN, a new 20 million euro cruise ship, the biggest tourism liner to operate on the River Douro, has been officially christened at a special ceremony this week by the Duke and Duchess of Bragança.
The Douro Queen sets new standards in luxury along the Douro River, accommodating a maximum of 140 guests in the utmost comfort. There are a total of 75 spacious, beautifully furnished and air conditioned cabins.
This is the only ship on the Douro River to feature a swimming pool and two whirlpools, and cabins on the upper deck have floor to ceiling windows, which give guests access to their own private balcony. All public rooms are spacious and offer an elegant yet comfortable atmosphere.
The sparkling grand lobby is finished in polished woods and marble, and is home to the reception and a souvenir shop. The bright and beautiful panoramic lounge is lined with large windows and houses a bar and dance floor – the perfect place to enjoy a delicious glass of port with friends.
Excellent dining and luxurious seating is offered in the restaurant and the sun deck and patio bar invite guests to enjoy the gorgeous scenery of the Douro Valley. It is also worth mentioning that the cruise liner offers full access for the disabled, with a special lift adapted for wheelchair users that serves the ship’s four levels.
The Douro Queen is one of two ‘hotel boats’ owned by the Douro Azul Group, constructed in the shipyard of Viana do Castelo. Speaking at the launching ceremony, Mário Ferreira, president of Douro Azul, emphasised that the new ship “is going to strengthen the tourism excellence of the Douro Valley”.
