The New Orleans Jazz Band, on one of their rare forays to the east Algarve, will be playing on Saturday, June 6 at the Casa do Povo in Moncarapacho at 7pm.
This is a new venue for the Algarve’s number one Dixieland jazz band and the management hope that they will play there on a regular basis.
The Casa do Povo already has a regular Sunday afternoon tea dance which is very popular, attracting scores of people – “although very few foreign residents,” laments Joaquim, the president of the Casa do Povo. He hopes to attract more foreigners with Dixieland and New Orleans style jazz.
The New Orleans Jazz Band was formed in 1998 by a group of international jazz musicians, all now living in the Algarve.
The current line up of the band is Ray Charsley (trumpet/vocals), Dave Lawson (clarinet/saxophones), John Ballinger (trombone/vocals), Cory Sea (guitar), Luís Hilário (contra bass) and Tony Scriven (drums/leader/vocals).
The band plays a mixture of blues, stomps, marches, spirituals and ragtime.
Cost is €10 for non-members or €6 for members of Casa do Povo.
For those who need energy for dancing, Chef Mark Weiss will be preparing a three-course Cajun meal (€18).
