New online platform to register deaths

Doctors practising in Portugal are now required to register all deaths and their causes on an online platform to allow for a more “efficient, rigorous and stricter monitoring” of the cases.
Named SICO (Sistema de Informação dos Certificados de Óbito), the platform came into effect on January 1 at all public and private hospitals in the country.
The system was created in 2012 and began being used on an experimental basis at Coimbra University Hospital and other health institutions, being subject to gradual improvements up until its implementation across all national health service units.
