AS PART of the commemorations for International Museum Day (May 18), the Pólo Museológico de Salir was opened to the public for the very first time.
Following the archaeological excavations carried out over some years alongside the ruins of Salir Castle, various objects of interest were found which relate to the Islamic period, namely day-to-day items such as vases and water-jugs and even a headstone.
For this reason, it was decided to create this museum, a project led by architect Mário Varela Gomes, in order to present a permanent exhibition of the items found.
Through the museum, it is hoped that there will be greater awareness of the important role and strategic position of Salir during the period that the Algarve was conquered by the Moors.
The Pólo Museológico is described as a cultural venue that every tourist should visit when they come to the typical Algarvean village of Salir. Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 10am until 6pm.
