New molecular biology laboratory increases Covid-19 testing capacity in Algarve

Unilabs Portugal and Grupo HPA Saúde, in coordination with the Municipality of Faro, inaugurated today (May 31) a new Molecular Biology Laboratory as part of the “Operation Summer Safe Algarve”, which will increase the Covid-19 testing capacity and shorten the time to obtain results, namely for the standard PCR tests.

The Molecular Biology Laboratory has the capacity to carry out 15,000 tests per day and represents an investment of €1.5 million. A network of testing centres will be set up throughout the Algarve, creating 50 jobs for laboratory staff.

With the expected increase in tourism during the summer months in the Algarve, and mandatory testing to enter Portugal and return to the country of origin, Unilabs, in partnership with the HPA Group, will strengthen the region’s testing capacity, “resulting in a quicker response, without the need for samples to be transported for testing to another region of the country”. This screening centre is located near Forum Algarve in Faro.

In parallel with the installation of this screening centre, a network of specific locations and programmed screening routes in hotel units will be created, “assuring convenience and expanding access to these essential services”.

“The expected increase in the number of foreign tourists requires an effective and timely laboratory response. For this reason, and because Unilabs and the HPA Group intend to provide a quality service and excellence for all who need it, we decided to setup this new laboratory to reinforce the response capacity in the Algarve during the summer months. It is an investment in quality and proximity, which we consider to be essential and an asset to support the recovery of tourism in the Algarve,” states Luís Menezes, CEO of Unilabs Portugal.

For Dr João Bacalhau, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the HPA Health Group, “this service that we are now offering in partnership with Unilabs Portugal will significantly increase the (testing) response capacity in a critical period when thousands of visitors (travel to the Algarve), resulting in greater convenience and speed”.
