The good news is that there is a new law that limits the maximum fine anyone can receive for non-payment of motorway tolls. The bad news is that it only comes into force in a year’s time. Thus, until then, everyone needs to be alert if they travel on a motorway without a special transponder device that automatically deducts the fees from one’s bank account. The new law will limit fines to five times the initial charge, with a minimum of €25, and maximum of €50 explain reports. It was proposed by Iniciativa Liberal, and promulgated by President Marcelo “a week ago”, says SIC Notícias, not really explaining why the country has to wait a full year before it reaches the Statute books.
