New initiative to counteract youth unemployment

It is called ‘Garantia Jovem’ and it has been set up to combat Portugal’s alarming level of youth unemployment.
Last week, national and regional representatives of the IEFP (Institute for Employment and Professional Training) met at Faro’s job centre to present the initiative.
Its goal is to get young people who sign up at job centres back into work, training, education or an internship within four months.
The plan, for youngsters from the ages of 15 to 29, was approved before Christmas last year, and announced by Secretary of State for Employment Octávio de Oliveira, who actually came to the Algarve to discuss it.
The initiative is to be supported by a network of local partners which will attempt to respond adequately to the needs of each young person taken on-board.
Anyone who fits the bill and is not enrolled in the school system nor is signed up at any of the job or training centres can join ‘Garantia Jovem’ online or at support establishments.
