New harbour facility for Vilamoura

A new anchorage area, developed by architectural firm Broadway Malyan, is to be built to complement the existing facilities at Vilamoura Marina.

The project will include two buildings for shops and restaurants, the office of the future headquarters of Lusort, the company responsible for the marina,  a support building for the shipyard area of the marina, as well as basement parking and landscaped areas in the area around the harbour.

Margarida Caldeira, Director of Broadway Malyan, told the Algarve Resident: “The strong point of our project will be the spectacular set of wave shaped roofs that will cover most of these buildings, which will surely become a future icon of the marina.

“It will include four large white concrete covers, using a support structure designed in partnership with the renowned engineering firm Ove Arup, which will make the sea entrance to the marina very eye-catching.”

She added: “The design of the new anchorage area of Vilamoura Marina has been awarded to us after we won an architectural competition.

“The idea was also to create an iconic building. Lusort believed in us and in our ability to design a project that could renew the image of the marina,” added Margarida Caldeira.

With about 1,000 berths, the Vilamoura Marina is one of the largest and most important marinas in Portugal.

The project, whose total investment cost has not been revealed, will see the refurbishment of the area surrounding the new harbour facility, including the establishment of new mooring points for larger boats and a new public space for recreational and commercial boats.

No date has yet been announced for the start of the works.
