With news that yet another person in Portugal has won a whopping load of money in the Euromillions Jackpot – this time €73 million – the question of everyone’s mind is “who is the lucky punter?”
Whoever it is spent €6 last Friday at Café Rosa, a little watering hole midway between the houses where the three shepherd children who witnessed the Fátima sightings nearly 100 years ago once lived, and the site where pilgrims are flocking in their droves to celebrate the 99th anniversary of the “Apparitions of Our Lady”.
For all owner Lurdes Rosa can tell, the winner could even be a pilgrim who stopped to take a flutter.
Locals are said to be already wondering whether the news is “yet another miracle of Our Lady of Fátima”.
Meantime, police are redoubling vigilance along the area’s roads following an accident in which a car driver ran into three pilgrims, fortunately not causing major injuries.
Exactly a year ago, however, the situation was very different, with carnage on the road to Fátima as a drunk-driver ploughed into a group of walkers, killing five (click here).
The case, despite being a so-called ‘slam-dunk’ has still not come to court.
