Portimão council should see construction of the new waste water treatment plant (ETAR) start in September.

The new ETAR will replace the existing one and is expected to be the largest and best equipped sewage treatment plant in the Algarve.

It is hoped that the new facility, which will be managed by regional water authority Águas do Algarve, will put an end to the bad smells in the area around the EN125 bridge entering the city.

Sixteen companies have submitted their tender for the construction of the plant.
