New development expected  to solve drug problem

An old cannery in Portimão that has lain abandoned for decades may be demolished to make way for an aparthotel.

Portimão Câmara vice-president Luís Carito told Portuguese daily newspaper Correio da Manhã: “The Câmara has responded positively to this project. This development will see the construction of several blocks of holiday apartments in a closed condominium.”

It is expected that part of the factory’s façade will be maintained.

Residents and local business owners claim that this area is used regularly for drug trafficking and the Câmara sees this project as a solution to the problem.

The plan will be presented to the public this month, with works scheduled to start in 2011.
